New design! These quena are the result of many experiments over the years that have resulted in an instrument with superior tuning balance. Well balanced quena are nearly impossible to find, and I don’t believe you will find any quena that can match the intonation of this design.
For all flutes, I recommend one of my Flute Care Kits. They are only available as an add-on purchase at the time of checkout (after you have pressed the “Add to cart” button you will see the option for the care kit right along side and you have to select it from the menu).
My standard quenacho typically has some offset holes for ergonomics (for players who play with the finger tips). This quencho is optimized for the piper’s grip, so it features inline holes.

Be advised that as with the xiao, the Quimera in the key of C requires a bit more reach and for most players it is necessary to use the traditional xiao grip to hold the flute comfortably. This is also called the “piper’s grip”. I recommend this technique for all xiao and Quimera, but your mileage may vary.

The Mojave series of flutes are minor-tuned end blown flutes, coming in 4-hole, 5-hole and 6-hole versions. Due to the scale intervals, the placement of the finger holes on the lower tuned versions means that they cannot be played using conventional fingering (six holes on top of the flute). The only key that comes in the 6-hole option is the key of B. Lower tunings come in a 5-hole version and the lowest tuning (low F#) comes in a 4-hole version. The five hole version is played covering two holes with each hand on the top of the flute, and using a thumb hole. This means that with the exception of the key of B, the Mojave only plays part of the minor scale, though it does play it across two plus octaves including some harmonic overtones.
The reach on this 5-hole version might be problematic for some players because the holes are quite far from the mouthpiece, so players with shorter arms or smaller hands might not be comfortable. I suggest contacting me for details on this matter before purchasing.

Curly Maple (stained), 1.8 Key of D. Part of the new East Meets West Series of Baroque-style Asian flutes! Inspired by the gorgeous decorative style of Baroque flutes and recorders, this is the same great wine in a new bottle (it is the same shakuhachi design with a different appearance).

Essential Flute, Key of D with lip plate. Normally the Essential Flute does not feature a lip plate, but I had a couple of beautiful pieces of wood that did not have quite enough girth (at the head of the flute) to make an Essential Flute, so I added a lip plate made from black ebonite. Despite the different appearance, these sound and perform exactly like my standard Essential Flutes.
The Essential Flute plays the diatonic major scale (do, re, mi) and has a 2.5 octave range with excellent intonation. Suitable for all types of music, including Irish Traditional. Ergonomically set up for a right-handed player (holding the foot of the flute toward your right). A highly versatile instrument.
For all flutes, I recommend one of my Flute Care Kits. They are only available as an add-on purchase at the time of checkout (after you have pressed the “Add to cart” button you will see the option for the care kit right along side and you have to select it from the menu).

The xiao is not just for Chinese music (though it excels in that context). These are fully-realized open-holed flutes with a tremendous range, and are ideal for many forms of music. You can play in a wide variety of styles with a remarkable tonal range. A true, Desert Island Flute! You can learn more about the xiao HERE.

I’m pleased to offer the new Compact Xiao! I wanted to make a xiao that was more convenient to carry as well as being easier to manufacture, thus allowing me to offer a fully functional xiao at a more affordable price. To understand how the Compact xiao differs from my traditional full-length xiao, visit the xiao page of this website: https://www.ellisflutes.com/world-flutes/xiao
