NEW! Bocote Quenacho, Key of D

$320.00 (out of stock)

Bocote Quenacho, Key of D w/ergonomic finger hole layout for comfort (right hand on lower holes). For players with smaller hands or limited reach, these might be a bit much. You can effectively play with piper’s grip, which helps a lot.

The quenacho is essentially a low quena. It is a six hole flute (there is a small thumb hole that acts as a register hole, but it does not play a note) tuned to the diatonic major scale, just like the quena.

For all flutes, I recommend one of my Flute Care Kits. They are only available as an add-on purchase at the time of checkout (after you have pressed the “Add to cart” button you will see the option for the care kit right along side and you have to select it from the menu). The care kit includes the recommended wax, fine steel wool and instructions for maintaining the finish on your wooden flute. For ebonite flutes, do not use steel wool–only wax and soft cloth.

NEW! Cherry Quena, Key of G

$275.00 (out of stock)

Cherry Quena, Key of G. New design! These quena are the result of many experiments over the years that have resulted in an instrument with superior tuning balance. Well balanced quena are nearly impossible to find, and I don’t believe you will find any quena that can match the intonation of this design.

For all flutes, I recommend one of my Flute Care Kits. They are only available as an add-on purchase at the time of checkout (after you have pressed the “Add to cart” button you will see the option for the care kit right along side and you have to select it from the menu). Redwood Rim Blown Flute, Key of F# (right-handed)

$300.00 (out of stock)

Salvaged Old Growth Redwood, Key of F# (pentatonic major scale). This is the same flute as the Basketmaker, only without a thumb hole (which is very tricky on a flute this big). This is the flute that Scott August plays in his amazing piece “Quiet Journey” which you can see below.

PLEASE CONTACT ME BEFORE ORDERING. This flute is not covered by my normal return policy. This is a very large flute and at least half of the players who try it cannot reach the finger holes comfortably. I will provide you detailed information to help you determine if you can play it, but once it is determined that you can reach the flute I will only consider a return on a case-by-case basis. I’m sorry to be so strict about this, but this has been a problem in the past and has obliged me to alter my policy. I get a lot of requests for this flute, but be forewarned that it is a stretch, even for tall players.

For all wooden flutes, I recommend one of my Flute Care Kits. Green Ebonite Shakuhachi, 1.8 Key of D

$1,300.00 (out of stock)

Glorious green ebonite shakuhachi! 1.8, Key of D. Weight: 450grams (16 oz.). For players unfamiliar with ebonite, I strongly encourage you to read my blog entry on the subject. It is a truly amazing material for woodwinds of all kinds, and it is all-natural (not plastic or synthetic). Waterproof, stable and demonstrating superior acoustic properties.

Making ebonite is as much art as science, and colored ebonite is very expensive (but worth it!), and the finishing process is much more labor intensive than wood. The extra cost for materials and labor is reflected in the price of these flutes.

NEW! The Essential Flute (updated design), Curly Black Walnut, key of Bflat

$450.00 (temporarily unavailable)
Check back in a few minutes to see if it's still in stock

Beautiful and highly figured black walnut. The Essential Flute is ideal for both Celtic music and World music of all kinds. Diatonic major tuning. Featuring a tapered head bore for improved intonation and projection. Ergonomic embouchure hole placement for right-handed player. NOTE: The Bflat tuning is the largest Essential Flute that I make, and additional ergonomic treatment of the holes is provided to make for an easier reach. Be advised that this flute has larger finger holes and a substantial reach. If you have smaller hands, or any sort of issues stemming from physical challenges, then this might not be the flute for you. Piper’s grip recommended.

The newest version of the Essential Flute features additional enhancements for improved performance and continuity of tone. You can read about it HERE.

*For all flutes, I recommend one of my Flute Care Kits. NEW! Updated design. Black Ebonite Xiao, Key of D/G

$650.00 (out of stock)

Black Ebonite Xiao, Key of D, tonic G. Making ebonite is as much art as science, and ebonite is very expensive (but worth it!), and the finishing process is much more labor intensive than wood. The extra cost for materials and labor is reflected in the price of these flutes.

New narrow bore xiao design brings a richer harmonic spectrum and improved intonation. Redesigned mouthpiece with ebonite cap. To learn more about how the new design came about, check out my blog: Revisiting the Xiao.

The xiao is not just for Chinese music (though it excels in that context). These are fully-realized open-holed flutes with a tremendous range, and are ideal for many forms of music. You can play in a wide variety of styles with a remarkable tonal range. A true, Desert Island Flute! You can learn more about the xiao HERE.

NEW! Updated design. Boxwood Xiao, Key of D/G

$575.00 (out of stock)

Boxwood Xiao, Key of D, tonic G. Boxwood might easily be called “banana wood” in many cases, due to its historically established tendency to warp like crazy (just take a look at that fourth photo). If you look at historical photos of wooden flutes from the 18th and 19th century you will see a lot of very bendy woodwinds. This has no effect upon the voice or playability of the flute. And in fact, boxwood makes a gorgeous sounding flute. However, due to the rather unusual shape of these flutes I did not add a subtantial upcharge for the wood (Boxwood is expensive and rare in instrument grade pieces).

NEW! Updated design. UNIQUE: Desert Ironwood Xiao, Key of D/G

$850.00 (out of stock)

Desert Ironwood Xiao, Key of D, tonic G.

This is a unique flute, and I doubt you’ll find another anywhere on Earth! I had a small selection of pieces of Desert Ironwood which make up this one-of-a-kind xiao. This is not a commercially available wood and I’ve been saving the few odd pieces that I have for many years waiting for a worthy use for them. Not as heavy as you’d think either, considering that it’s called Ironwood. Still, it is a beautiful, dense wood that really projects. A joy to play.
