Salvaged Old Growth Redwood Bansuri, Key of B (tonic E)

$350.00

Salvaged Old Growth Redwood, featuring an African blackwood lip plate. Key of B, tonic E. Redwood is a very soft and lightweight wood! It is wonderfully resonant to play, but it is not as robust as a hardwood, so handle appropriately.

NOTE: This is the largest bansuri that I make, and for those who are familiar with this tuning you will know that these require quite a reach. Not recommended for beginners or players with smaller hands. If you have any doubts about the reach, contact me to discuss before purchase.

Ellis-Korb headjoint for silver Boehm flute, Cumberland ebonite

$1,500.00

Ellis-Korb headjoint for Boehm flute, Cumberland Ebonite with threaded tenon for precision fit to your silver flute. Sterling silver bore rings, classic embouchure cut. Waterproof, beautiful and spectacularly resonant, with superior projection and articulation, specially designed to bring easier access to your third octave notes.

The Ellis-Korb headjoint, in both wood and ebonite, is thin-walled and elegant, and blends well with the natural lines of the flute. Too many of the wooden headjoints that are available tend to be very clunky (they look a bit like a log attached to the head of the flute!) but the delicate profile of the Ellis-Korb headjoint looks and feels like a natural extension of the Boehm flute.

Headjoint ships with a selection of different sized tenons, all threaded to fit the headjoint. Player selects the tenon that best fits their flute and returns the extra tenons in a pre-paid shipping container. Ensures that this headjoint will fit your flute, regardless of make and model.

Briar Ebonite Quena, Key of G

$400.00

Briar Ebonite Quena, Key of G, Tapered bore for enhanced projection and superior tuning.

For players unfamiliar with ebonite, I strongly encourage you to read my blog entry on the subject. It is a truly amazing material for woodwinds of all kinds, and it is all-natural (not plastic or synthetic). Waterproof, stable and demonstrating superior acoustic properties.

Making ebonite is as much art as science, and colored ebonite is very expensive (but worth it!), and the finishing process is much more labor intensive than wood. The extra cost for materials and labor is reflected in the price of these flutes.

Sorry, no sound sample yet!

Redwood Rim Blown Flute, Key of F# (right-handed)

$300.00

Salvaged Old Growth Redwood, Key of F# (pentatonic major scale). This is the same flute as the Basketmaker, only without a thumb hole (which is very tricky on a flute this big). This is the flute that Scott August plays in his amazing piece “Quiet Journey” which you can see below.

PLEASE CONTACT ME BEFORE ORDERING. This flute is not covered by my normal return policy. This is a very large flute and at least half of the players who try it cannot reach the finger holes comfortably. I will provide you detailed information to help you determine if you can play it, but once it is determined that you can reach the flute . I’m sorry to be so strict about this, but this has been a problem in the past and has obliged me to alter my policy. I get a lot of requests for this flute, but be forewarned that it is a stretch, even for tall players.

Blue Ebonite Essential Flute, Key of C

$450.00

Blue Ebonite, Key of C. NOTE: This piece of ebonite is obviously not very blue! The making of ebonite is an organic process and there are often variations in how it presents in the finished product. Colored ebonite is often a mixture of black ebonite with some colored ebonite. In this case the black dominated, so the blue is very subdued–so much that it barely shows up in photos. It still has the amazing resonance that is a feature of ebonite, but I’m not pricing it like I would colored ebonite. I’m treating it like black ebonite, which is not as costly.

The Essential Flute is ideal for both Celtic music and World music of all kinds. Diatonic major tuning. Featuring a tapered head bore for improved intonation and projection. Ergonomic embouchure hole placement for right-handed player.

The finger hole spacing on the C tuning may not be as comfortable for players with smaller hands, in which case I’d recommend a smaller Essential Flute.

Listen to the amazing Blayne Chastain demonstrate the flute in the sound sample below.
